You are the apple of God’s eye

This Christmas message was written just after midnight. In Englehart, Ontario, it has just become Christmas day. In the next five hours tiny tots will be waking up their parent(s) up for Christmas. I reflect on when as a seven year-old boy I knock on my parents’ bedroom door at 5:30 a.m. Knock. Knocks harder. “It’s time to get up! It’s Christmas!” 15 minutes would go by, then 20. Sitting at the top of the stairs sighing , I saw mom and dad emerge half an hour later! The gift of a G. I. Joe American hero figure that could talk is a joy to receive. Yet, Christmas is about more than the presents. It’s about being an enduring gift of love to one another.
As we celebrate this beautiful and special time with family and friends let us give a gift one to the other that requires no wrapping paper. It is already there in each one of us ready to be shared. That one of a kind gift is YOU.
God has been busy shaping and developing the wonderful gift that is you from the time you came out of your mother’s womb. Scripture says that you are the apple of His eye. According to Rabbi Yechiel Eckstein on his web site HolyLand Moments.org:
“The phrase, which first was used in the Bible, comes from a Hebrew expression that literally means “little man of the eye,” and it refers to the tiny reflection of yourself that you can see in other people’s pupils. To be the apple of someone’s eye clearly means that you are being gazed upon and watched closely by that person. Your very image is dancing in the eyes of that person!”
So when David asked God to “Keep me as the apple of your eye” in Psalm 17, he was asking God to keep an eye on him and not lose sight of him. David was asking that God would regard him as one would a cherished child, the object of great affection. And because he was the apple of God’s eye, David also asked for God’s protection: “hide me in the shadow of your wings.” Just as a mother bird protects her young by covering them with her wings, David was seeking shelter in God from those who were out to destroy him, from his mortal enemies who were surrounding him.”
It’s a pretty special thing indeed that God thinks YOU are the apple of His eye. The gift that is you is important.
Just think of the awesome wonder, the comfort that it gives you knowing God literally has His eye on YOU! You are what He sees in His spiritual eyes.
I don’t know about you, but to know God loves me so much that I am the apple of His eye means a lot to me. I feel loved and valued as God watches over me. He is showing to me each moment how much He loves a sinner like me.
As we close out this old year and welcome our new year, I would like you to embrace the fact that YOU, yes YOU are the apple of God’s eye, His all-loving, all-powerful, all-knowing, all-seeing affection your Lord has for YOU!
Share the gift that is you as you are used by God to teach others that they are the apple of His eye too.
