The Light that shines in the darkness

Almighty God, we come to You today seeking to find all that is light in the darkness around us. We live in a world where many have not yet learned to love people as their brother. Men garbed in black say that their murders are righteous. There is nothing that is ever righteous about murder. They are making a statement they want the world to hear that what they perceive as the killing of their children justifies them taking the lives of others.  Murder is a violation of one of Your commandments. The murders by ISIS are also a violation of Islamic law that says the killing of one human-being is equal to killing humankind. In such times as these when darkness covers this earth, when war rages in many countries, when many live each second, each minute filled with hatred, when our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ are being ridiculed, tortured, imprisoned and killed for shining Your light of hope, faith, love and Your Truth within them we ask that You, oh God, would help us see everything that is light, everything that is beautiful, everything that is lovely, everything that is joyful..

Let us all see the beauty of love. We thank You that You bring people into our lives who love us. They listen to us in our sorrow and rejoice with us in our joy. They draw us to think on those things that are pure and lovely. They hug us when the world feels cold and distant, when we are hurt by those we love with their exacting and cutting words meant to tell us how much we have failed to measure up, that we are lazy and unmotivated, that we could change our circumstances if we just worked a little harder, that though in agonizing pain we can yet press on, that we are complainers with nothing ever positive to say. Lord, when these precise cuts come to us from the Enemy give us sight to see all that wonderful, tender, compassionate and giving love that is around us. There is such priceless value in that hug, handshake, words of encouragement and those so comforting arms of Your love that enfold us, protect us and lift us in our hurt, in that bitter pain of friendly fire to be cradled like a baby seeking nourishment. You allow us to take respites where we are not required to be adults, where we have freedom that the Enemy cannot take away from us to play, laugh, sing, cry and rejoice that we are Your children.

Father, I pray that in every second of this day and every day that we all would take time to see the light around us in all You have created. Oh, that we would rejoice today in Your glorious creation! As I sit in my chair seeing the beauty of Your trees, hear the sound of birds speaking to each other and all of us. my spirit says they are telling us not to focus on those things that are dark and fill us with horror and sadness, but to sing a song of praise in our hearts that You created the trees, the majestic mountains, forests, rivers, lakes, seas and oceans. You created the cool and refreshing wind last night after many days of hot and humid weather. You created all the animals large, small, strange and even awkward like the albatross, who keeps on insisting it can fly.You created our kitties, William a.k.a. Sir William at Large and Catherine a.k.a. Princess Catherine of Chaos , who love us , who lay on my comforter when I am sick, who call us from our cares and concerns to take time to play with them and laugh at their antics. In those times we see awkward animals Your created I think You are reminding us that even awkward, slow and disabled people are Your perfect creation.

Father, let us all take time to love those with physical and developmental challenges. Give us the spiritual sight to see beyond their disabilities to how they all teach us what open, honest and giving love really means. Instead of judging them for not being motivated enough to change their circumstances let us instead see how hard they do try to change them. Many have illnesses where they are in constant pain. Many have to work harder to prove they are capable of working. Many have to deal with people who think disability means inability, Sadly, many have to deal with the attitudes of some cult groups that they asked for illness, that they asked to be disabled, that they created their own poverty. Protect the disabled and the ill from false teachers cloaked in light who are really filled with darkness, who only seek the destruction of Your children of light. Help us all to learn from those who can’t see,  hear, walk, understand or speak like those who are healthy, who don’t have to wake up each day and wonder what energy they will have for that day or if they who have life-threatening conditions will end up in the emergency room, be hospitalized, suffer further disability or die.

All those who struggle with illness need our love, not our judgement, not this confrontational counselling that some counsellors say is for the good of those who are already doing more than they should, networking for several hours each week for work, begging and even pleading for someone to look beyond their challenges and see the blessing, that intelligent, articulate, creative, out-of-the-box thinker You fashioned in the fire of adversity, that soul who is seeking or has risen from their dark and lonely prison of abuse to emerge because of Your love and the love of Your people, to see those rays of light break through the darkness of their despair. Oh, God, heal them fully so they too can see that the light of Your Son shines in their darkness, embraces them, infuses them with a new hope that the Enemy cannot destroy because victory for them has been purchased on the Cross, blood flowed mingled down, did ere such love compose so rich a crown we sing, that crown bathed in tearsand sorrow, that we would all see our brighter tomorrow.

Oh, ’tis such such an awesome thing that from darkness does light and new hope spring. Till He returns or calls me home here in the power of Christ I’ll stand.

About Dr. Kevin Osborne B.A., B.Th., M.A., M.Div., Psy.D. Ph.D. and Th.D. Candidate

I enjoy spending time with people just having a coffee or talking about life, philosophy, religion, politics or sharing a favorite joke or story. We learn from one another as we interact and share our joys, challenges and even our times of sadness. I enjoy reading, writing, singing and sharing in the blessing of community whether that is one on one or in groups. I'm married and am powned by two kitties named Sir William of Lounge a.k.a. Sir Lounge a Lot and Princess Catherine of Chaos a.k.a. Her Royal Highness Catherine of Englehart. Two years ago I completed my Doctorate in Psychology (Psy.D.) through St. James the Elder University. On Sept. 26th 2020, I graduated with a Master of Divinity degree from Canadian Christian Theological Seminary. These journeys were started over 20 years ago. In 1997 I received a Bachelor of Theology degree from Canada Christian College & Graduate School. Between working and studying it took 13 years to finish it. Let us pray for and reach out to each other with kindness, love and an embracing compassion. We can working together be servants with two open hands to those in need so that hate, indifference and inequality would lose and love will win. The peace and abounding joy of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
