Mercy Came Down
Mercy came down from Heaven above.
The baby Jesus, sinful humanity’s gift of extravagant love.
Grace for you; grace for me.
Give us eyes, Father, Your amazing love to see.
Grant us that this day, we would ask for Your help along life’s way.
There are times that the hurtful things people say,
cause us to feel we aren’t okay.
We can think we are much less than we are.
But as Your one and only Son came down in human form,
we were given a gift beyond compare.
We were promised and this still is true,
that love abounds in hate,
that in all the dark things people say,
there is Christ’s light to guide us each day.
Don’t think that your faith is weak because you need to cry.
Tears are the medicine that our souls need
when the hurt, the terrible harm to us, that people who don’t think do, and those with
malice in their hearts, has us wondering where, Father, in all of it, we can find You.
Remember, David, as he cried out to God when
fleeing from King Saul’s army,
because the king went into a jealous rage for David gaining more honor than him
when David won victory over the Philistines.
Returning from the battle women danced as they sang:
“Saul has slain his thousands,
and David his tens of thousands” (I Samuel 18:7, NIV).
David, an army chief who became one because of killing Goliath in his youth,
was now running for his life.
When David hid in a cave,
when the tears came, God showed him how in His love,
David could abide.
Tears full of sorrow soaked his pillow as he slept
It was here in this gloomy state of sadness he wept.
Terror must have filled his heart, each waking moment wondering is this the day
I will be killed?
It was when he was at his lowest,
that God came and met David where he was at.
When David poured out his heart to our Father,
as he couldn’t sleep, God didn’t leave him without help.
Our Father brought him comfort.
He brought David peace.
He told David tears are for the soul’s release;
they refresh;
they revive;
they restore.
Father, this would be my prayer for everyone out there.
In every weight,
In every care, they would find You loving them there.
They would cry out to You and be honest about their suffering,
because You know our thoughts,
our most anxious thoughts, like You did with David.
You know us when we get up as much as when
the day is over, and we go to sleep.
With all our faults, You still love us.
You hear us when we have no words we can pray,
You listen to our speaking silence when we don’t know what to say.
You never stop loving us even when we get angry at You.
Remember that prayer many of us made as children.
“I pray the Lord my soul to keep.”
Nothing is lost when it’s in God’s tender loving care,
not even the night as we sleep.
As you close your eyes, you can turn your thoughts to our Father.
You can ask Him to turn off the spinning wheels of your mind,
remove the lists from your thinking, the stinging things,
the cutting, grating, irritating, cruel, and thoughtless words of others.
Father, grant us the grace of forgetfulness as we close out the day.
Remove the sting of the awful things people say.
Please don’t allow it to ruin our night and spoil our day.
Every time when you look up into the sky,
take a moment to say a prayer that mercy came down in the form of the Christ child.
Love poured out and running over for you, for me.
Grace that grants sin’s captive liberty
Grace that loved you enough to die
Grace that will never pass you by
Grace that was with David as he did cry,
“Create in me a pure heart, O God,
and renew a steadfast spirit within me” ( Psalm 51:10, NIV).
When David repented of his sin,
he experienced the peace of God within.
In all the insanity of this world, the hate, the cruelty, the injustice,
we have a present we can open whenever we want.
God’s love is there in every circumstance,
in every crisis,
in every struggle.
in every heartache.
Grace for you;
grace for me;
grace that sets sin’s captive free;
grace from now into eternity.
