The Roads I’ve Walked Down
When I was a child I walked down a road called play.
I cut a cardboard box in the shape of a TV tube.
I drew knobs on it.
I acted out the world as I wanted it to be.
I forgot for a while the abuse of my father, Jim.
These were his words to me.
“You’ll always be a failure.”
You’re brother’s smarter than you’ll ever be.
Why are you so clumsy you can’t tie your own shoes?”
Such were the words of my abuse.
But through decades of pain life began to live in me again.
I learned the value of forgiveness.
I sought to understand my father’s schizophrenia.
A few years before he died we sang songs together.
He joked with me one day saying,
“Kevin, is your razor broken?”
I said, “No.”
He got me saying,
“But it must be or you wouldn’t have a beard!”
I’ve been down the road called forgiveness.
I forgave my father for the beatings, and hurtful things he said.
I released healing within.
I allowed love to flow.
I let it grow.
Now, I’m on a road of discovery.
I’m learning how I can share what I’ve learned.
I’m expanding the horizons of my vision.
I’m seeing more blue sky than grey.
I’m feeling I’m a-okay.
But enough about me.
What roads have you walked down?
What have you learned?
Don’t keep those life lessons to yourself.
Share them with others.
You might find in doing so you get new friends,
sisters and brothers.
