On Canada Day weekend, I reflect on the world of 50 years ago. War was raging in Vietnam. There were all kinds of protests about it. Long hair and bell bottom pants were the in thing. Well, they weren’t in my family:) I was only four then.
Bobby Gimby who wrote the Ca-na-da Song would be invested in 1968 with being an officer of the Order of Canada for “the spirit which he infused into Centennial Celebrations with his trumpet and the song he wrote “Ca-na-da”.1 He felt it was a matter of urgency to write the song to help unite a more divided Canada. The song would go on to sell over 500,000 records, a record for the time. He came to be known as the Pied Piper of Canada. Watch the video and you will find out why.
As we celebrate 150 years of nationhood let us remember the spirit of unity Bobby Gimby inspired. We are an inclusive country that welcomes immigrants from all around the world. We are strong. We have gone through times of war, peace, and now we like many countries are going through times of terrorism. I believe all of us around the world will persevere because we are all united by the common bond of compassion.
On this Canada Day weekend, I’m proud to say, “Je suis un Canadien. I am Canadian.”
Kevin and Karen Osborne are psychotherapists and pastoral counsellors. Kevin is studying to become a chaplain and professor of Psychology specializing in Pastoral Theology. Karen enjoys doing cross-stitch while I like writing and singing songs. Karen makes me laugh when she sings the kitty bed-time song saying, “It’s that time. It’s the bestest kitty time of the day!” Kevin enjoys teasing the kitties and making them do kitty dances with music. Their kitty, Catherine, loves it when kitty daddeh sings All Things Bright and Beautiful. Kevin likes doing impressions. He tells children’s stories and helps others with their problems using his hand puppet, Dr. Teddy, who is a therapy bear. He is a partner with us in our counselling practice. We are available to assist with worship and preaching to give busy pastors and ministers a much-needed break. We offer in-office, and phone counselling to anyone in the world.
