Thought to ponder:The hospital staff need to practice using dummies until they don’t dump patients on the floor:) Within the laughter this image invokes there is a serious point. In journalism I learned that for successful communication to occur there is a sender and a receiver. If you don’t take time to listen to the point the sender is seeking to convey, the message won’t be properly received. The hospital staff will need more practice sessions so they don’t have any other patients go off the table. Perhaps, they need a communication seminar.
Questions for reflection:
- When you had problems communicating your point to someone else, what did you do to get your message across?
- Think about a time when you didn’t understand what someone was saying. Did you just ignore it and move on or did you seek to clarify what you wanted understood?
- How do you think we can be more effective communicators?
